Vein treatments are used to treat varicose or spider veins—enlarged or twisting veins with a dark bluish color that bulge under the skin—in order to reduce their appearance and relieve symptoms.
What are vein treatments?
Treatments for varicose veins can include sclerotherapy, photodynamic therapy, laser therapy, thermal or radiofrequency ablation, and more. At Vascular & Interventional Specialists, we use radiofrequency ablation and sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy is a type of treatment wherein your physician injects a medicine or chemical solution into the affected vein(s) to close or eliminate them. Below, read more information about two treatments we use for sclerotherapy: Varithena® and VenaSealTM.
View our pages on varicose veins and spider veins to learn more about radiofrequency ablation, along with more information about the conditions.
What is Varithena®?
Varithena® is a treatment we use at Vascular & Interventional Specialists to treat varicose veins. Varithena® uses a chemical foam called PEM (polidocanol endovenous microfoam) that irritates the lining of the vein and causes it to close. The sealed vein is eventually eliminated by the body, and blood flows normally using other nearby healthy vessels.
What is VenaSeal™?
VenaSeal™ is another treatment method we use for varicose veins. VenaSeal™ uses an adhesive to close the affected vein(s) rather than a chemical sclerosant or heat (ablation). VenaSeal™ may reduce the risk of nerve damage, bruising, and discomfort compared to other methods. It is a highly effective treatment with a 94.5% closure rate.
